에스파니아의 명장 '로드리고 디아즈 '의 일대기를 다룬 3시간짜리 스펙터클 액션 서사극.

전체적으로 인물간의 대사는 연극적 형식이 특징이며, 파란만장한 주인공과 그 주변 인물들간의 엇갈린

갈등과 감정들이 흥미롭게 진행된다. 특히 군중의 지지를 받는 진정한 영웅의 모습을 잘 묘사하였으며,

리얼한 마상 결투 장면과 대규모 엑스트라를 동원한 전투 장면들이 볼 만하다.

1080년경의 스페인은 기독교와 무어 인(회교도)의 싸움으로 불행한 나라가 되었다.

비바르 출신 로드리고 디아스는 바로 역사의 인물 엘 시드이다. 스페인 제일의 영웅인 그는 종교적 적대감을

버리고, 기독교와 회교도가 손을 잡고 외적의 침략을 막자고 호소했다.

외적은, 지중해 건너 북아프리카 해안에 집결 중이었다. 그 외적의 군주는 벤 유사프.

 

스페인이 기독교인과 무어족으로 양분되어 있을 때, 청년 기사 로드리고는 전투에서 사로잡은 이교도인

무어족 사라고사의 왕 무타민을 같은 스페인 국민이라는 이유로 석방시켜주자, 그로부터 '엘 시드'라는

영웅 칭호를 얻는다. 하지만 이 일 때문에 반역죄로 몰리게 된다. 명예회복을 위해 약혼녀인 시멘의

아버지이자 반대파의 수장인 고르마즈와 결투를 벌인다. 그러나, 고르마즈가 죽게 되자 약혼자이지만

아버지의 유언대로 시멘은 사랑에 대한 배신감에 복수를 결심한다.

 

카라오를 자신의 영토임을 주장하는 아라곤 왕 라미로가 페르디난도 왕에게 선전포고 하자,

양국 수석무장과의 결투로 영토 분쟁을 조정하기로 한다. 마침내 로드리고는 아라곤의 수석무장 돈 마틴을

마상결투에서 승리하여 승승장구, 시멘과 결혼하게 된다.

그러나, 로드리고에 대한 그녀의 증오는 변함이 없었는데...

 

한편, 카스틸, 레옹, 아스토리아를 지배하는 돈 페르디난도 왕이 죽자, 왕자들 사이에서 왕위 쟁탈전이

벌어진다. 누나 우라카 공주와 손잡은 둘째 동생 알폰소가 형 산초를 제거하고 왕위를 차지하게 되자,

불의를 참지못한 로드리고는 왕위 즉위식에서 성서에 서약을 강요하며 알폰소를 징계하자, 결국 불경죄로

추방된다. 마침내 시멘은 로드리고의 정의로운 용기에 감복하여 증오심을 거두고 그를 따르게 된다.

 

마침내 내전을 틈타 호심탐탐 기회를 노리던 이슬람계 무어족 벤 유사프가 아프리카 무어족과 연합하여

해안으로 침략해 들어오자, 자신을 따르는 백성들과 동맹을 맺은 무타민 왕과 함께 출전한다. 그의 군대가

자신을 따르지 않자, 알폰소는 로드리고의 아내 시멘과 아이들을 인질로 잡고 위협하나, 시멘을 연모하는

오르도네즈 백작의 도움으로 탈출한다. 결국 전투에서 그만 화살을 맞은 로드리고는 큰 위기를 맞는다.

이때 알폰소 왕이 군대를 이끌고 달려와 자신의 잘못을 인정하고 그를 중용한다. 로드리고는 스스로 치료를

포기하고, 승리를 위해 전투에 임하여 적의 근거지인 발렌시아섬에서 스페인을 지켜내고 자신은 숨진다.

In 11th-century Spain, the Christian kingdoms of Castile, Leon, and Aragon face the constant threat of

the warring Moors and their determination to spread the Islamic culture throughout all of Europe. 

Into this arena of violence rides Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, whose courage, wisdom, and spiritual strength

earn him the sobriquet El Cid, or "The Lord."

 

Following one particular battle, El Cid liberates some Moorish emirs on their vow never again to attack

Castile.  His act of mercy is misinterpreted as treason by Count Gormaz, the father of his beloved

Chimene and, to protect the family honor, El Cid is forced to slay the Count in a duel.  Although

Chimene vows to have her revenge, she is obliged to marry El Cid upon the bidding of King

Ferdinand, but they do not consummate the marriage, and Chimene enters a convent.

 

A short time later Ferdinand dies, and his kingdom is divided among his three quarrelsome children,

Alfonso, Sancho, and Urraca.  Before long, the weak, ambitious Alfonso arranges the assassination

of Sancho.  When El Cid refuses to vow allegiance unless Alfonso swears himself innocent of his

brother's death, he is banished from Castile.

 

But through the long years that follow, El Cid continues to battle the Moors, and his ranks increase as

loyal subjects join him by the score.  Eventually his noble nature wins over even Chimene, and she

again declares her love for him.

 

When the Moorish leader, Ben Yussuf, begins planning a massive invasion of Valencia, Alfonso

recalls El Cid from exile and places him in charge of the army.  For days the battle rages and on the

eve of the last great Moorish onslaught El Cid is mortally wounded by a stray arrow.  Attended by

Chimene, he makes her promise that, alive or dead, he will lead the next day's charge.  Obedient to

her husband's wishes, Chimene has El Cid's dead body mounted firmly on his white charger and

placed before his troops.  And when the Moors see the seemingly invincible El Cid riding once more

into battle, terror and confusion overtake them, and they flee in disorganized panic toward their ships.
