조화로부터, 천상의 조화로부터

이 우주의 구조가 시작되었나니,

자연이 우위를 다투는 원소들의 무리아래 놓여

고개를 들어올릴 수 없을 때,

감미로운 목소리가 높은 곳에서 들려왔다.

“죽음에서 깨어나라!”

 
From harmony, from Heavenly harmony

This universal frame began.

When Nature underneath a heap

Of jarring atoms lay,

And could not heave her head,

The tuneful voice was heard from high,

"Arise ye more than dead."

음악이 어떤 정열인들 불러일으키고 가라앉히지 못하랴!

유발이 거북이 등껍질을 연주할 때

주위에서 연주를 듣던 형제들은

신성한 음악에 대한 경외심으로

얼굴에 놀라움의 빛이 떠올랐다.

 

What passion cannot music raise and quell!

When Jubal struck the corded shell,

His listening brethren stood around

오르페우스는 사나운 짐승을 이끌고

뿌리가 뽑힌 나무는 그 자리를 떠나

수금의 뒤를 따른다.

그러나 세실리아는 더 높은 영혼의

경이로움을 일으켜,

그녀의 오르간 연주가 시작되었을 때,

연주를 들은 천사들이 지상을

천상으로 착각하여 나타났다.

 

Orpheus could lead the savage race:

And trees unrooted left  their place,

Sequacious of the lyre:

But bright cecilia rais`d the wonder higher:

When to her organ vocal breath was given,

An angel heard, and straight appear`d

Mistaking Earth for Heaven.

이 우주는 멸망할 것이며

트럼펫은 하늘 높이 울려 퍼질 것이다.

음악은 하늘의 조화를 깰 것이다!

귀족 가문 태생으로 체칠리라고도 알려진 그녀는 로마에서 태어났으며,

크리스챤으로 교육받고 성장하였다.

그녀는 자신의 반대에도 불구하고 발레리안과 결혼하였으나,

남편으로 하여금 자신의 동정을 존중해 주도록 확신시켰고

남편과 그의 형제인 띠부르씨오를 크리스챤으로 개종시켰다.

 발레리안(축일:4월14일)과 띠부르씨오는 그 때부터

늘 자선 활동에 전념하다가 순교하였다.

그들이 행정관인 알마치오 앞으로 끌려가

이방신전에 희생하라는 강요를 거절하자,

심한 매질을 당하였고, 로마 근교 빠구스 뜨리삐오에서

막시무스(4월 14일)와 함게 참수당하였다.

막시무스는 그들이 보여 준 그리스도께 대한 굳은 신앙을 보고 감화받아

크리스챤이 되었다가 순교한 것이다.

체칠리아는 이 3명의 순교자들을 장례지낸 뒤에 체포되었다.

 그녀는 용감하게 알마치오와 논쟁하였으며,

그가 체칠리아의 신앙을 도저히 꺽을 수 없다고 생각하자 사형을 언도하였다.

질식사시키려던 그녀의 사형 집행이 기적적으로 중단되었을 때,

한 군인이 그녀의 목을 베도록 선발되었다.

그가 맡은 일을 서투르게 처리하므로써,

그녀는 3일 동안이나 누워있다가 9월 16일에 운명하였다.

 체칠리아는 음악과 음악인들의 수호성인이다.

그 이유는 그녀의 결혼식 때

그녀는 결혼 음악과 환호하는 소리들을 듣지 못하였고,

오히려 그녀의 내심으로

하느님을 찬양하는 노래를 불렀다고 생각하기 때문인 듯하다.

그녀의 문장은 오르간이다

세실리아, 또는 체칠리아는  cielo(하늘)와 gigli(백합)이  결합된 단어로

하늘의 백합, 천상의 백합을 뜻한다고 합니다..
